Spion Kop Lodge Winterton, KwaZulu Natal

The Lodge, comprises of the original homestead with nine well-appointed ensuite bedrooms ,each with its own veranda ,looking onto the garden .We offer a free wifi service in the reception, dining room and pub area of the lodge . The full-board tariff is R 2592.00pp.per night.  Bed and Breakfast rates are available on request. The main building houses a small but well-appointed library, containing many historic books, a lounge with a fire place in which to relax. We also have three  ensuite bedrooms in  Sunset Rest House. The old-world traditional dining room and bedrooms are complete with ceiling fans and polished wooden floors.

There are  two  private , self-catering cottages with fire places , sleeping  4 and 5 guests , @  R 2150 .00 and R2508.00 per night ,per cottage respectively . The two cottages have been converted from the original farm buildings , which were built in the early 1880’s and  are constructed from  dolerite and we have tried to maintain the colonial theme throughout . The larger cottage, Acacia has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus a very small, single bedroom. Aloe cottage has two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Visitors may either self-cater or have all meals in the dinning-room, just as the mood takes them. Both cottages have braai facilities.

The original barn built in 1890, has been converted into a reception area, dining- room and cosy pub. Added to this, we have a small but well-appointed Conference Room for corporate conferences. There is a water hole in front of the deck where one can see some amazing birds and an amazing view of the Eastern Free State Mountains and the famous Spion Kop Battlefield.

Experience the ultimate in relaxation and tranquillity, lazing in the pool, as you watch the spectacular sunsets, or just sit on the deck and absorb the serenity of your beautiful surroundings, or amble along the birding trail to the water-hole. We are a member of Birdlife South Africa because there are some 295 varieties of bird species on and around the farm .

Imagine yourself on the summit of the rugged and historic Spion Kop Battlefield as the sun goes down, and looming shadows fall as the moon rises! Awesome! Raymond Heron (FRGS) lectures in the United Kingdom, and has presented at the Royal Geographical Society in London.

Spion Kop was the scene of one of the bloodiest and perhaps, most futile battles fought during the South African War of 1899-1902. This theatre of war, was to bring together three significant and influential characters from the chapters of modern history, namely, Winston Churchill, a 23 year old war correspondent, Louis Botha who was to become the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa in 1910, and a London qualified lawyer, Mahatma Gandhi, who was a stretcher bearer with the volunteer Ambulance Core. One end of the Anfield Football Stadium in Liverpool, is known as the “KOP “,in honour of the soldiers from  Liverpool and her surrounds, who fought so bravely,  some losing  their lives, during the Battle of  Spion Kop .

As the Farm is of great historic significance, we specialise in trips to the Battlefields, Spion Kop, Colenso and Ladysmith. Raymond Heron ( FRGS) our Historian, who usually goes to the UK annually to lecture on his subject, and Alastair, who is also a Cultural and Battlefield  Guide  ,will bring the battles alive in the theatre of your mind ,with their ability as a raconteurs and passion for the story and this area. They will also instil an interest in birding and nature, as you meander through this historic valley, on your journey into the past, as you relive the events of that fateful battle, enabling you, to relive the past that changed our future, as you walk in the footsteps of great man.

We are able to offer a diverse number of activities here at Spion Kop Lodge and our local surroundings, making us fairly unique as a destination.
