Sondagskloof Cottages Stanford, Cape Whale Coast

Peacefulness at Sondagskloof

We all dream of a lifestyle that blends in with nature and there are only a few places where you can experience a little of that…

Sondagskloof situated on a dirt road 20km from Stanford was the dream that became reality for Cathy Marriott and Basil Stilwell.  They have been living on this beautiful smallholding since 2010.

They have started off with a small cottage amongst the poplar bush and from there started building their home consisting of eco-friendly haybales, small bricks, wood and sink and today their house is a space full of character and surprises.

Cathy, the “Google-kleinboer” started with producing homegrown vegetables, fruit etc so sustain themselves and keeping things fresh with the concept of farm to table.

Cathy has recently extended her creativity and ideas by adding two lovely chalets to Sondagskloof:

Vlei Cottage and Forest Cottage

Both these cottages are nestled amongst ancient Poplar trees, a spring fed mountain dam and fynbos covered mountains.  The chalets are situated in the beautiful Sandies Glen Valley.  With only these two chalets to rent, both are intimate and tranquil.  Each unit has its own fire pit outside for cooking and stargazing and wooden hammocks are strung between trees for afternoon snoozes.

The self-catering units are built with respect for the environment, using sustainable methods and rely on solar energy and water from the mountain spring.  Both equipped with stylish furnishings, cotton percale linen, towels and a chef-style galley kitchen.  A big wooden sun deck with braai facilities overlooking the natural dam and is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, reading and meditating.

Vlei Chalet: –

Built from Larch & Spruce wood, this sunny, beautifully appointed 2 bed-roomed chalet is perfect for family accommodation. Big sliding doors face the Poplar forest bringing nature in & is backed by a spring fed dam. Main Bedroom has a queen size bed & the 2nd, a double bunk bed. There is a stylishly furnished open plan Living room/ kitchen, fully equipped with under counter fridge & gas hob. The bathroom opens onto the deck with sliding door for an indoor/outdoor shower experience.

Forest Chalet: –

Built from Larch & Spruce cured to a dark finish, this secluded one bed-roomed chalet blends into the surrounding Poplar forest nestled next to a winter running stream. A King size bed, a luxurious bathroom with sliding door onto deck for an indoor/outdoor shower experience. The living-room/ kitchen is stylishly furnished & is fully equipped with under counter fridge & gas hob. Big picture windows & sliding doors open onto the deck, drawing the peaceful forest inside.

Guests have got access to

Our beautiful self-catering farm chalets offer you a luxurious escape from your busy life, and a retreat where you can indulge in the silence of nature. Bird”noise” and the rustle of the breeze through the poplars – your only distraction. With no TV or cell phone reception you can truly escape and reconnect with yourself and your loved ones.

We offer incredible stargazing, swimming in a pristine spring fed dam, easy country rambles, and an abundance of mountain bike trails through the valley’s fynbos covered mountains.

Read, cook, braai, and snooze in wooden hammocks and human size “nests” strung up in the forest – recharge and indulge in the peacefulness. Forage for mushrooms in spring and autumn and explore our organic garden where you can pick your own veggies.

Come and tune in with the sounds of nature, a different pace of life.  Reconnect yourself and your loved ones

“It’s been over a week since our stay and all i can think about is going back. We were warmly welcomed by Francis accompanied by the sweetest dog duo Daisy and Tessa who spent quite a bit of time with us which we absolutely loved. The stunning eco friendly cabins with glass doors on the side are somewhat submerged in forest making it the perfect winter stay with lots of sunlight beaming in hardly feeling cut off from the outdoors when needing to be inside. Had a rather delightful walk and a fun time visiting the farm animals. Cathy is an amazing super host who pays particular attention to detail which we really appreciate. We cant wait to go back to this magical slice of heaven one day”
