Marrian George Hotel Piketberg, Swartland

You will find, Marrian George at the entrance to Koringberg, a sustainable lifestyle hotel offering luxury accommodation in the heart of the Swartland.

Marrian George presents a colourful celebration of considered fine living in Koringberg, a village where time seems to grind to a halt in the torpor of the Swartland’s warm summer days.

The only sustainable lifestyle hotel in this corner of the Swartland, Marrian George offers a characterful, colourful escape. Whether you’re in search of places to stay on the West Coast, accommodation near Malmesbury, or simply an idyllic weekend retreat, this is your perfect destination. Pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read, reconnect with your loved ones, enjoy a leisurely lunch at the MG Canteen, or explore the village on a relaxing walk. Even better? Take a rejuvenating nap in one of our plush rooms.

Every room recalls a chapter of Joanne’s life, from the Marrian celebrating her English and Scottish heritage to the riotous flora of Natal, evoking the abundant greenery of the province where she was born. The bountiful wallpaper of Botanical celebrates her childhood days spent in Durban’s abundant Botanical Gardens.

While the trio of rooms upstairs celebrate Joanne’s early life, the pair of ground-floor rooms tell a more contemporary tale. Avon is named after the corner of England where she and Chris spent many happy years. It is also the hotel’s only suite, with a glorious private sitting room overlooking the pool deck and distant wheatfields, perfect for those seeking luxury accommodation on the West Coast. Next door, the wallpaper and upholstery of George offers a playful tribute to Joanne’s English Pointer and the hotel’s other namesake who is known as the Keeper of the Keys.

Accommodation

Avon Suite

Celebrating a corner of England that is especially close to the owner’s heart, Avon is our exclusive ground-floor suite. Distinguished by shades of Bristol Blue, here the bedroom leads into a delightful private lounge with sash windows opening onto views of the pool terrace and beyond, the wheatfields and mountains.

The modern en-suite shower room, with water partly sourced from the hotel’s borehole, comes fitted with an eco-friendly hot water system.

George

With a flock of ducks flying across the headboard, George offers a playful tribute to the other namesake of the hotel: the owner’s regal English Pointer. Chances are you’ll meet George during your stay, but otherwise reserve the room that has all the same grace and poise of this proud hotel mascot.

Located on the ground floor, George offers views from the bay window of the indigenous gardens and pool terrace.

The modern en-suite shower room, with water partly sourced from the hotel’s borehole, comes fitted with an eco-friendly hot water system. This is also our room that is ideal for persons with impaired mobility.

Botanical

The bountiful floral wallpaper of the Botanical room celebrates the owner’s childhood days spent in Durban’s tropical Botanical Gardens. Overlooking our vegetable garden and windmill, enjoy gorgeous sunrises and sunsets through the double sash windows.

The modern en-suite shower room, with water partly sourced from the hotel’s borehole, comes fitted with an eco-friendly hot water system.

Across the corridor is the Sky Deck, ideal for afternoon drinks, late-night stargazing or quiet digestifs.

Natal

You’ll love the riotous colour that is celebrated in the Natal, a first-floor room evoking the exotic landscape of the province in which the owner was born. Strelitzias bloom across the headboard, while plantation chairs create a mini-suite ambience that all but begs for lazy afternoons with a book. A highlight is the private balcony overlooking the hotel gardens and croquet lawn and witnessing the spectacular sunrises. Expect to spend many a happy hour gazing out at the views across the Swartland.

Marrian

Celebrating the owner’s English and Scottish heritage, expect a nod of timeless elegance across the décor and soft furnishings of the Marrian room on the first floor. Occasional chairs are playfully decked out in the family tartans, while the bucolic wallpaper could easily have been plucked straight from a country pile in the Cotswolds. But, this is Africa, so expect wide sash windows to dish up glorious views out across the wheatfields of the Swartland.

Across the corridor the spacious Sky Deck is ideal for afternoon drinks, late-night stargazing or quiet digestifs.

The Hounds

The Hounds is thoughtfully designed for those travelling with their four-legged companions. Located on the ground floor, this inviting room features its own private entrance and secluded courtyard, offering a peaceful retreat for both guests and pets.

Furnished with a double extra-length bed and a cosy seating area, it also includes a coffee station with a Nespresso machine, free Wi-Fi, and a modern en-suite bathroom with a matte-steel, LED-lit shower. As Marrian George’s only pet-friendly room, The Hounds ensures that every guest — human or canine — feels right at home.

Wine Tasting

Back in 2006, Marrian George’s owner, Joanne Hurst created a garden vineyard of Shiraz and Viognier, and by 2009 was producing highly respected wines that showcased the unique Swartland terroir. Today, the Wildehurst wine range includes a Cap Classique, Cinsault, Tinta Barocca, Chenin Blanc, Semillon and a Straw Wine.

You’re invited to taste the full gamut of Wildehurst’s wines at the MG Champagne and Brandy Bar. Experience an exclusive tasting of the owner’s private wine collection, featuring selections not available to the public.”

Play Room

Located above the MG Canteen, a mezzanine room plays host to this convivial communal space where hotel guests are invited to play board games, read or start a game of cards. There’s also a flat-screen TV for those that need to catch the all important weekend match or keen to watch a movie after dinner.

The Games Room can also be converted into a boardroom setting for small business meetings.

Lap Pool

We know the Swartland can get hot. Happily, Marrian George features a deliciously refreshing farm-style swimming pool that is available exclusively for resident guests.

Set alongside the indigenous gardens of the hotel, surrounded by wooden decking, it’s the ideal spot to while away summer afternoons in the Swartland. Don’t forget the sunscreen…

Croquet Lawn

Anyone for croquet? A delightful highlight of Marrian George is the addition of our own custom-built croquet court, with all equipment available to guests.

Ask our staff to teach you the basics, and before you know it you’ll be executing a flawless roquet, and setting up a perfect rush to the next hoop, splitting the balls with precision and using your bisque to make a strategic cannon with your rover ball for a peel, before clinching the game with a final hoop.

Stargazing

Koringberg is a sleepy little spot, and the lack of any big-city buzz means artificial light is kept to a minimum. That ensures this corner of the Swartland enjoys inky-black skies that are simply perfect for stargazing.

After dinner at MG Canteen, take your nightcap of choice (might we suggest a snifter of South African brandy?) up to the first-floor balcony, or out into the garden, to admire the Milky Way sweeping across the southern skies.

“If there is a hotel deserving the label boutique hotel, then it is the Marrian George Hotel. It is small, and done with so much love. The hotel’s interior is bursting with creativity, from the crest to the individuality of each room. A lot of emphasis is on the comfort, functionality AND beauty of the whole hotel inside and outside.
The staff are incredibly helpful and a joy to deal with. Our supper and breakfast was great, the wine outstanding. We will come again!”
