Kleinrivier Mountain Escapes Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape

Just 70km from Port Elizabeth, Kleinrivier is the perfect getaway!

Situated in the picturesque Eastern Cape and sharing two borders with the Groendal Wilderness Area, Kleinrivier Wilderness offers you the ideal opportunity to escape the pressures of city life in a pristine mountain environment.

The Tented Camp, Stone Mountain Lodge and Self-catering Cabins (Dassies) have been designed and situated to give nature lovers of all ages a unique wilderness experience.

Kleinrivier is a haven for birders and hikers as well as those who simply want to relax amid the stunning mountainous surroundings.

Black Eagle Tented Camp

Wake up to a chorus of bird calls and hear the owls and dassies call at night.

Black Eagle Tented Camp is a five-minute walk from the car park (so pack accordingly) but the effort is well worthwhile. Shaded by ancient Forest Elder and Tierhout trees, your tent is a cool oasis on a hot Karoo day.
Black Eagle sleeps eight in four double tents. All four tents have been upgraded and are now larger and brighter than before thanks to a large glass, sliding door. These tents also have their own bathrooms with water heated by a wood-burning “donkey”.

The kitchen is fully equipped for eight guests and has a fridge, freezer, and a four-plate gas hob.

The parking is accessible by a normal vehicle..

Dassiekrans Cabins

The four chalets at Dassiekrans were built by nature lovers, for nature lovers. As they are situated apart from each other, the thick riverine bush ensures privacy.

The chalets either have views up the Kleinrivier valley or across to the cliffs on the opposite side where the dassies bask in the morning sun. Dassiekrans 1 and Dassiekrans 2 overlook a stream fed by a perennial spring which has shallow pools where you can watch the dragonflies hover in the morning sun. All linen and towels are supplied. Most units have two single beds which can be linked to form a King size double.

The ensuite bathrooms look out onto their own natural gardens. Some units have showers inside and outside. Each unit has its own kitchen with a 12V camping fridge. Lighting is supplied by solar-powered batteries. Braai facilities are paramount. Some units have a choice of two outside fireplaces, and all have an inside fireplace. Dassie 4 is larger than the others with an extra room which allows it to sleep 4 guests.

Pepper Tree Cottage

This newly renovated cottage overlooks our dam and is one of the best spots to sit and watch the sunset as the fire blazes and a glass of red wine rests lightly between your fingers.

There are three bedrooms, one has a king and a single bed, one has a queen bed and the other a single bed.

The living area is large enough to accommodate a larger group than the 6 that can sleep in Pepper Tree, so if you are planning a celebratory weekend with a few friend book in here and make this your rendezvous point.

The kitchen is well equipped with a 5-plate gas hob but the only electricity is 12V for the lighting and fridge.

Hot water is supplied by a wood-burning”donkey”.

All the hiking trails on Kleinrivier have been developed by us, the owners. We have tried to preserve as many of the trees as possible as all the initial cutting has been done by our own hands. We are all passionate hikers and nature enthusiasts and utilize these trails often to access the area. All trails are well-marked.

    “PARADISE!!!
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary weekend there. Absolutely beautiful, Nature at its best. We thoroughly enjoyed the Riverside trail and it’s amazing views.
The perfect place to get away from it all. Off the grid and a stone throw away from the city. We will definitely be back again.” – Kim Swart

“Black Eagle Tented Camp is a wonderful escape from the hustle and the bustle, nestled in a gorge surrounded by mountains with interesting rock formations, trees, rich bird life and monkeys. The accommodation is very comfortable, and the decor is in keeping with the surrounding vegetation. Highly recommended as a very restful, and a place to recharge mind body and soul. You will most certainly be seeing me again”- Gail Brennan Charalambous

“Great accommodation surrounded by nature and off the grid. Perfect place to reconnect with family and friends in peace and quiet. I would suggest that a wood fired hot tub be installed for those cold nights. It would suit the accommodation perfectly, allowing guests to keep warm and enjoy the natural surroundings more, especially in winter. We enjoyed making use of the braai and fire pit, admiring nature while keeping warm. We had a great stay and would recommend it to everyone.”- Brynley Ron Coetzee

“What a treat to spend a long weekend in the most secluded, beautiful “off the grid” indigenous haven. I loved the silence (save for the sound of the astonishing variety of birdlife and an occasional baboon), the variety of hiking trails, the sense of safety and privacy, the comfortable and very attractive accommodation with every needed facility (and amazing woodwork) and the magical swimming pools in the kloof. Most rejuvenating weekend retreat ever! (My only gripe: the intrusion and noise of another visitor’s drone flying low over the kloof which frightened birds and left this solitary swimmer feeling “spied on”. Perhaps these shouldn’t be allowed in this beautiful wilderness?)”- Melissa Riordan
