Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve is an eco-adventure destination, nestled in the Nougaspoort Valley, 25km from Touwsrivier. Our mission is to offer our visitors an unparalleled outdoor experience in the South African Karoo – one of the most unique natural areas on earth.

Comfortable accommodation options vary from camping to fully equipped self-catering in a variety of cottages and houses. Guests enjoy unspoiled views, breathtaking stars, days and days of hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, photography and 4×4 trails, or simply relaxing with a good book.

The reserve presents opportunities to enjoy different activities such as hiking, 4×4 driving on approved routes, rock climbing, mountain biking, customized team building events and conference facilities, flower and succulent tours, bird watching, and star gazing.

Accommodation options

Southern Nights

Southern Nights offer you unrivalled comfort and convenience. The well-equipped kitchen has a gas oven and hob and a full-size fridge with an inside dining table.

Sleep your best sleep on the queen-size beds with beautiful linen, and indulge in the luxury of your own bathroom with a large oval bath and shower. Relax summer and winter in the generous lounge with inside fireplace. Two sleeper couches with quality bedding offer the opportunity to accommodate 4 couples.

The sheltered stoep area is completed by its own braai and meals can be enjoyed looking out onto a unique valley.

Montana Vista Cottage

Without a doubt, the most stunning accommodation on Gecko Rock. This wooden home is perfect for entertaining.

Enjoy your own wood-heated jacuzzi, on a stunning wooden deck with an outside braai. Inside there are two bedrooms with queen size beds, quality linen and a shared bathroom. The lounge and kitchen area are equipped with an inside fireplace, a modern gas oven and hob and a full-size fridge-freezer. Quality cutlery, crockery and cookware is supplied to make your catering a pleasure.

Your location between mountain ridges and your own view as far as you can see, completes a special experience.

Sugar Bush Cottage

This is a Karoo retreat at its best. Hot tub, sheltered entertainment area, views for ever, and completely private. After a break here, you probably won’t go anywhere else for your time away. The cottage has a generous living area, comfortable bed with two large couches that fold out into double bed size and a modern kitchen with full size fridge. The living area leads out onto a large covered deck with lots of seating for lazy days spent enjoying the view.

The cabin is positioned high up the side of a ‘Kopje’ and commands a north-westerly view over an uninhabited valley. The closest other accommodation is well out of sight and at least a kilometer away. This unit is absolutely ideal for a family of 6 and also offers a separate cottage for two who want to enjoy a family weekend but still have some privacy. This extends the comfortable accommodation to 8. The adjacent and separate cottage is only available to rent to friends or family of those in the main Sugar Bush Cottage.

Electricity is solar, and water is from our own boreholes. Yes, the power is always on at Gecko Rock and the taps always have water.

Rhebokvlakte Cottage

Looking for that special spot for a romantic getaway – or your own valley to enjoy with the kids?

Kolkol hot tub for your added pleasure. Enjoy this hot or cold depending on the weather.

Fully equipped for self catering, Rheboksvlakte offers a very private stay. Situated in a panoramic valley the cottage guarantees a front row seat to the best sunrise in the Karoo. The insulated finish and good air flow, ensures cool days and warm nights.

Perfect for 4 people, the cottage will accommodate two people in the one bedroom and 2 more in the lounge area on a sleeper couch. You could also add friends who enjoy camping outside the cottage.

Our beautifully crafted cabins are situated alongside De Wets Rus Campsite and comfortably sleep 6 guests.

A full size stoep with outside table and chairs makes the best of breathtaking views. The braai area is a step down off the deck.

De Wet’s Rus Campsite

De Wet’s Rus is a typical Karoo campsite that looks out into a stunning valley, bordered by mountains.

Walking and cycling trails are close by and you be enchanted by unmatched sunrises, magical sunsets and a panorama of stars.

For those laid-back Karoo days, the splash pool is filled from mid September to mid April.

Echo Valley Campsite

Nestled in a private valley, this intimate campsite is ideal for smaller groups who prefer privacy.

The campsite is located close to the Seattle 4WD trail and Gecko Crag, making it ideal for climbing groups.

An old windpump turns in the Karoo breeze, completing an iconic Karoo scene – the perfect accompaniment to your campfire and tent.

This campsite also has a small plunge pool for those warm Karoo days.
