Blommekloof Country Cottages, Garden Route

Blommekloof is situated in the Leeukloof, a wonderfully beautiful valley near Ruiterbos, in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains, just off the R328 national road between Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn.  It is an ideal central place if you are wanting to visit the sights of Oudtshoorn, Mossel Bay + Hartenbos, or travel slightly further afield to explore the Garden Route, George, Vic Bay, Wilderness etc.  Once you’ve finished with the crazies – you can retreat to the peace, quiet and sanctuary of the farm, with its wide open skies and incredible stars at night.

We offer self-catering accommodation at reasonable prices in the modern, solar-powered Sunflower Cottage (2 bedrooms, sleeps 4 – 6 as there is a sleeper couch in the lounge if need be) and in Old Cottage – a restored labourers house that sleeps eight- to ten people. (It has two bedrooms with double beds – one bedroom has a cot, and both have en suite bathrooms; a third bedroom with four single beds; and a two-person sleeper couch in the lounge.)

We also have extra beds available – so we can jiggle and juggle to accommodate larger groups of friends, or families with loads of kids.  We’re pet-friendly and child-friendly.

Blommekloof Country Cottages – off the grid, cozy, comfortable, clean, and fully equipped. No TVs, though. No cell phone reception. So you’re set for a perfect break. We do have WiFi now so you can catch up with essential work and messaging …… but we encourage you to take a break from the rat-race.

We built Sunflower Cottage for the planet – and for you. It’s solar powered, eco-friendly, madly comfortable, and fully equipped. You’ll want to stay forever.  Once we got a handle on Solar Power we moved the whole farm off the grid – so Old Cottage runs on Solar too.  We also harvest all our own water – so we request you use it sparingly 😊 All lights not in use – please turn off.  In very wet or rainy weather we ask that you use electricity sparingly as we don’t like running the noisy generator !

The road to the Farm is tar except for the last 6km’s which is gravel.  99% of the time it is good and well graded and maintained.  But there is the very occasional time when it has poured for days and the roads are bad – just call us beforehand and we’ll give you instructions to come in the top way – through Bosbou Village if that road is better.

The Farm is designed for your pleasure – to walk, run in the area, Mountain bike along the roads and the firebreaks – stargaze, paint, fish (catch and release only please !) in all 3 of the dams…….. but most of all – to just Chill and relax.  There is a jungle gym area for the kids, but there must be supervision at all times, especially if kids want to swim in the dams.  Birdwatching is a must – and if you visit our website there is a list of birds seen in and around the farm, bring the binoculars and see if you can add to the list or spot the elusive Buff Spotted Flufftail !  At night you will hear the Owls as they set off a hunting !!! Don’t get a fright if you run into a Caracul on your walks, or even a porcupine – and sometimes if you are quiet you will see the gentle Bosbok grazing or passing thru.

You are most welcome to give Harold + Essie (Escargot) the donkeys, and Whisky the horse the odd treat – carrots or apples – but they are very fat and get quite excited, so please be careful and try to keep a fence between you and them, especially if there are kids around.

Sunflower Cottage was designed to capture the spirit of the Cape, and the energy of the sun. With a large, open-plan living area and a wide, covered patio, it’s a comfortable, practical house where you’ll relax completely.

In short:

  • 2 bedrooms – one with a double bed (you’ll go nuts for the brass headboards), and one with two single beds. (We can also move in a double bed or bunk beds on request.)
  • 1 bathroom with bath and shower.
  • Open-plan living and lounge area with wood-burning fireplace.
  • Fully equipped kitchen and dining area with crockery and cutlery for 4 or more people, and gas-powered oven and stove.
  • Fridge with freezer compartment.
  • Microwave for heating food, baby’s bottles.
  • Covered patio with braai area.
  • We provide essential consumables – toilet paper / soap / fire-lighters / garbage bags / dishwashing liquid etc
  • We’re now off the grid– so no hairdryers, please…

Service:

  • Fresh linen and towels are provided – and we’ll freshen them up if you’re staying longer than a week. Please bring swimming towels.
  • We want you to enjoy your privacy, so we don’t provide cleaning services during your stay – but we can arrange them at a fee.

Supplies:

  • Firewood and braai-wood are supplied free of charge.
  • Fresh farm milk can be arranged and Free range eggs are available on site.
  • We suggest you bring the bulk of your groceries with you, but the Ruiterbos Farm Stall – 8 km from Blommekloof – carries a range of basic supplies. It’s a general dealer, craft market and restaurant with pizzeria.
  • The best Organic  Cheesery on the planet is just around the corner – make sure you book a visit with them info@leeukloof.co.za

Pets:

  • Well behaved dogs, cats, horses, parrots, goldfish – everyone’s welcome here at Blommekloof, but please contact us before you arrive to discuss your furry friend’s requirements. (And yes, we do have our own farm dogs – One friendly Ridgeback who will adopt you, 2 street specials and 2  little Jack Russells).
  • Sunflower Cottage is surrounded by a low fence (1.2 meters) with a gate that you can lock.  Please keep pets inside the garden when not on a lead.
  • Please do not let dogs chase the geese, chickens, sheep, donkeys etc – if they are not voice trained they must be on a leash.

Relax on the stoep at Old Cottage. Let your eyes rest on the birds on the water of the lake in front of you, and let your mind wander where it will…

Read the visitor’s book in quirky, comfy Old Cottage – our restored laborers cottage – and you’ll see: our guests fall in love with this old girl every time.

  • “The best peaceful getaway ever!”
  • “Cute, interesting, friendly” “
  • “Sweetest little cottage.”
