Basterkloof Cottages Botrivier, Overberg

Basterskloof farm started as a dream of a well-travelled Capetonian couple wanting to create a getaway for their own family in 1950’s. A getaway where one can breathe fresh air, drink clean water and enjoy the qualities nature has to offer the way it was intended. Botrivier, Van der Stel Pas was close traveling distance to and from anywhere in the world, but it still felt like you were isolated enough to reach inner peace once you hit the gravel of the pass. It’s a safe destination where you can still forget to lock your door or leave your personal belongings outside. The farm is a family operated farm without commercial influence. The cottages where build mostly from that produced naturally off the farm. The water is fynbos infused healthy and clean for drinking with its own mineral and anti-oxidant benefits. This resource we respect at Basterskloof because without it we cannot offer sustainability of our unique fauna and flora. The farm offers about 300 hectares of exploring by offering multiple small little paths ideal for walking or biking. The dams are well maintained suitable for swimming, fishing and canoeing.

” We were in awe from the moment we stepped into the cottage. It’s well fitted, cozy and you are surrounded by nature. What more do you want.”- Kobus Allen

“As part of a milestone birthday celebration, my partner surprised me with a 2-night stay at Basterskloof Cottages. Having been obsessed with horses since exiting the womb, Basterskloof was the perfect choice.
Hoekplaas, where the Basterskloof Cottages are located, is also home to the Appaloosa and Knabstrupper horses owner, Marna Smith, breeds.
We were greeted by Marna on her dinky ride-on lawnmower and her 3 very friendly dogs. After learning more about the farm and her passion for these particular horses we made our way to River Cottage, one of three on offer. Rectangular in shape with exposed ceiling beams, this quaint cottage is surrounded by paddocks and a collection of beautifully cared for horses.
The bedroom, with its double bed made up with crisp, fresh bed linen, offers views onto the paddocks as well as a door leading out onto a cobbled patio. The bathroom offers large fluffy towels, a Victorian-styled bath, a free standing shower, basin and loo. The lounge area also has a door leading out onto the patio as does the kitchen. The lounge consists of a day bed and a wooden pull-out bed, both of which double as sofas. The kitchen offers standard equipment (fridge, 2-plate stove, microwave, kettle and toaster as well as crockery, cutlery and glassware). There isn’t an oven so remember to pack in tin foil to use on either the indoor or outdoor braai. A bag of wood is supplied and additional wood can be purchased from Marna or in town at the OK general store.
Be sure to explore the farm but be mindful of the lightly electrified orange string on all the paddock fencing. I forgot – once – but lived to tell the tale… boyfriend however nearly burst a vessel trying not to laugh!
It was a stunning weekend and Basterskloof comes highly recommended! The peace and quiet envelops you like a warm fluffy blanket and Marna and her family, all 4-legged ones included, are an absolute delight!”- Mandy Rutherford
